You’ve graduated from a reputable college with a tech degree and top grades, so you think to get a tech job’s a cinch, right? You couldn’t be more wrong, especially if you have to first go through an interview. Regardless of your tech skills, your interview may be the hurdle that keeps you from getting your dream job.

Plenty of otherwise capable tech graduates fails at the interview portion of the job hunt. To keep you from making the same mistakes, be aware of the following common errors that too many tech job seekers commit:

The era of techs dressing like slobs is over, and that’s an especially egregious mistake on an interview. You don’t even have the job yet! Maybe when you’ve attained some seniority in the company you may be given some leeway, but not when you’re still applying for a job.

It’s also not enough that you got a nice polo shirt on, especially when you also have tattered jeans and “classic” Air Jordan sneakers. Seriously, it doesn’t portray you as a serious worker on whom a company is supposed to invest their time and money. When in doubt, dress conservatively. You’re not out with friends. Instead, you’re interacting with a person who has a say on whether or not you get a job with them at the end of it all. They have power over you, so it’s right if you’re a bit formal during the interview. You have to be courteous.

If you’re too casual, then it may seem as if you’re not really serious about getting the job. That’s not the kind of worker that companies are eager to hire.

It’s understandable if you like to talk about your range of technical skills. After all, that’s what you trained for and you’re more comfortable talking about what you actually know. You may want to emphasize your various certifications and other credentials.

Yet on interviews, your goal is to present yourself as more than a walking set of tech skills. You still have to prove that you’re a good fit for a company and their team of current tech workers. So you also have to present a positive character and not simply highlight your tech skills.

The ability to work as part of a team is a crucial requirement for many companies. You’ll fail to do just that if you somehow mistake your arrogance as self-confidence. If the interviewer thinks you’re arrogant, then they may also conclude that you’re not much of a team player at all.

At the end of the interview, the interviewer may ask you if you have questions for them. This is your chance to find things out about the company that you didn’t uncover during your own research. It also shows your interest in the company and the industry they’re a part of.

So when they say, “Do you have any questions?” you don’t say “No”. In fact, before the interview, you may want to prepare some questions about the company in advance.

While it’s understandable if part of you is asking the “What’s in it for me?” question, you still need to refrain from discussing the subject during the interview portion of the job hunt. Instead, you have to push that back after they’ve made you a job offer. So don’t go into the details regarding your benefits. Companies prefer workers who put the job and company first (or at least seem to). A “me-first” attitude is a turn-off.

When you’re on a first date, you don’t spend too much time griping about your exes and your woeful romantic situation. The same goes for a job interview. Just because the interviewer seems friendly doesn’t mean you can go on and on about your previous work problems and current job hunt tragedies.

A successful interview doesn’t fade out like some sort of awkward conversation. At the end of it, you have to close properly. You have to end it by showing them how much you’d like to be part of the company. You can also ask questions about the next stage of the job hunt process. You have to present yourself as an asset that the company should use.

So remember, getting a tech job isn’t all about having the right skills. It’s also about being able to communicate and having the right attitude. If you can keep that in mind, then your job interviews should go more smoothly!

Honesty is the best policy is an old but well-known proverb. It certainly is and a lot of people believe it. People will always appreciate the honesty of another.

However, the truth is uncomfortable to talk about, especially when you’re in an office set up. Business relationships are always built in a way where you need to put on a false persona. You need to save face and most of the time you have to hide who you really are.

So what does freedom in work actually mean? Does it mean having a pantry filled with things that you can eat at your own leisure? Does it mean having a dress code that allows you to come into the office while your favorite hoodie and sweatpants?

This is true for some people but to many others, it means being able to bring out who they truly are without having to fear to be an outcast. It means that’s they can simply be themselves. The question now presents itself, how do we achieve this for everyone?

We are all made up of layers

In this age, if you don’t act like other people or do what other people do, then you are already a target for scorn. Your unique perspective and actions aren’t really accepted by corporations and businesses.

People who come from the LGBTQ+ community or married individuals who choose not to have children may find that even the simplest of questions could open up a hazardous path leading to awkward office conversations. These people may be forced to answer a question that they don’t want to answer.

Questions like “when do you plan on having kids?” or “are you really gay?” are inquiries that people who fall under the spectrum of being ‘different’ have to deal with every day.  And honestly, it can get very tiring after a while.

Even if you aren’t technically hiding your sexual orientation, people will always still want you to magically conform to the norms of society. They may be thinking that asking questions like this might magically make you change your mind on whatever you’ve already set your heart on. To be honest, this never works.

In day to day office conversations, a non-conforming person may find themselves straining their minds. They are always burdened because they are always trying to think of ways to communicate with other co-workers without offending any of them.

An example of this would be, someone who does not have any interest in the importance of marriage or relationships in general. This person would have to find a way to explain that they are not interested in other people without offending the inquirer. In some cases, the non-conformist will have to evade the question altogether.

In tow with evading a conversation, individuals who find themselves in this type of situation commonly resort to talking about another co-worker. Not from ill intent, but from the perspective that this would be the only way to change the topic.

Of course, this is easier said than done. For the non-conformist, it would be hardly able to shake off the innate feeling of wanting to be different. One could not simply toss aside the feeling of being authentic. But, to talk about taboo things in the office would only lead to more complications.

While 50% of employees said that the pressure had disappeared because of their commitment to the company.

However, this practice still has a negative effect on people. This practice hinders the performance of the workers, and it could drain the individual in the process. Covering is also seen as a leading cause of attrition, with over 1000 casualties in companies.

Lead with Empathy

The best solution to this persistent problem is to develop safer and friendlier environments for people who fall under the spectrum of ‘non-conforming’. Leading with empathy includes implementing inclusive values, such as respecting an individual’s preferred pronouns.

To an employee, the people with the most influence are their supervisors. Once their team managers make them feel like their needs are acknowledged and that they’ve established that they are in a safe zone, then these individuals will feel less of an outcast and less likely to leave the company. Authentic concern for employees always produces good results, whether or not they are classified into the minority.

Supervisors must also strive to lead by example. Once someone from a higher position starts setting a new norm, their subordinates will start picking up on the habit.
