To travel on a budget is a daunting thing to many entrepreneurs, and unfortunately, it can limit you from visiting a potential client in a different state or visit your remote teams in a different country. To help you get the most out of your journey, here are a few simple travel hacks for when you must take that trip.
1. Go for the cheaper option
Get your priorities straight. You don’t have to pay that expensive fee to go inside the Eiffel Tower and neither should you pay for luxurious tours that take you around the city. If you can travel and explore on your own, then go for it. You will save a lot of money, a lot of time, and it will prevent you from having a lot of regrets.
2. Take advantage of free stuff
Some airlines will serve you free food. You can stash these snacks in your bag so you can eat them on a later date.
A lot of museums and tourists destinations offer free tours on certain events or certain hours. Use this to your advantage.
3. Bring the necessities
You don’t need to pack like you’re on some sort of camping trip. Just bring what you need. 3-4 shirts and a pair of pants are all you need. Bringing unnecessary things will only slow you down. Bringing less stuff also means that you’ll have more room to buy new clothes and new accessories.
4. Do your own laundry
Doing your own laundry will save you a lot of time and a lot of money. Do you know how much hotels charge for washing a t-shirt? Let’s just say that some hotels charge prices that are more expensive than the t-shirt itself.
Buy some laundry soap and do it yourself. You can even quick dry your clothes overnight by placing them near electric fans and AC units.
5. Don’t eat out all the time
If you’re spending most of your food budget on luxurious restaurants, then expect to lose a lot of money. You don’t have to eat luxuriously all the time, you just need to eat!
You can save money on food by eating street foods or buying food in the local market. If you’re renting an apartment, then you can just cook your own meals.
6. Use your connections
If you have friends living in your travel destination, then why not ask for their help. You could ask them to book hotels for you or ask them on where you should spend your money on.
If worse comes to worst, you could even crash on their place for a day or two. Just don’t overstay your welcome.
7. Take advantage of complimentary breakfasts
Most hotels and hostels offer free breakfast. Some of them even offer all you can eat breakfast buffets. Take advantage of this opportunity and eat to your heart’s content. You could even take some bread, fruits, and snacks with you if you ask nicely.
8. Skip some meals
If you really want to save some money then you can eat later in the day. Skipping some meals will give you more time to sightsee and enjoy the scenery. You will also enjoy your meals more because of this.
9. Use convenience store meals
The best way to save food money is by eating instant food. Get some instant noodles or packed meals. Eating instant food for a day or two could literally save you hundreds of dollars of food money!
10. Use public transportation
You can cut costs by using public transportations. Sure taxis may be convenient but some local taxi drivers and van drivers might trick you by charging you unfair rates. They think of tourists and foreigners as suckers for cash.
Public transportation might be slow and stuffy but at least you’re paying the local fare! Just research in advance where the buses and trains go. And it wouldn’t hurt to ask the bus driver where to get off.
Plan in advance
Contact travel agencies in advance, research the different tourist destinations, research about dangerous or risky areas that you should avoid, and most importantly check the rates of the hotels beforehand.
Knowing where to go and when to do it can save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars.
