Don’t Use Your First Hour on Trivial Matters
Some of us use up our first hour in the workplace on unimportant matters. We may simply take time making coffee, gossiping with other coworkers, or perhaps rearranging our desks. We may react to notifications or respond to emails.
But all these tedious activities are keeping you from more important tasks. They’re distractions. In fact, studies show that it takes an average of 23 minutes to recover your focus after you’ve been interrupted by trivial matters.
So use that first hour on something important right away.
Get Up Early
It’s true that plenty of us need some time to really wake up. We may need coffee, breakfast, some exercises, and a shower before we’re ready. If you need to do all these tasks first, then wake up early to give yourself ample time to do it. This means that when you get to the office on time, your mental “engine” is properly warmed up and you can rev up to do the work right away.
The Morning Isn’t the Time for Planning Your Day
Some people don’t like Mondays, and that’s because they didn’t prepare for it properly. The truth is that if you’ve spent the weekend recovering from the previous week’s stress, then Monday is the day when your mind and spirit are fresh and ready to go.
So if you want to get things done in the morning, don’t just “plan” to do the work. Just do the work instead. Plan the night before, so in the morning you’re ready to go to work. This isn’t limited to just your Monday morning. It applies to your entire workweek.
Plan the Day Beforehand
Planning the next day doesn’t have to take up a lot of your time. You can just take a few moments in the last few minutes at work, or you can plan at home while you’re decompressing.
Just think of the 3 most important things to do for the next day. This list should get you rolling the next day.
Start with the Most Unwanted (But Important) Task
In the evening before a workday, plan to do what you know would be an unpleasant task but would have to be done in any case. If you’ve made the list of 3 important things to do, just pick the one that seems most unpleasant for you. That should be your first priority.
So when your morning in the workplace comes, you don’t have any excuse to dawdle and to delay. You need to get this work done immediately.
The benefit of this is that you’re able to move this important yet unpleasant task out of your way. You feel good because you’ve done something important. In addition, you look forward to the rest of the day—they’re filled with more pleasant tasks!
